The principles of source‐record nonlinear editing are universal, regardless of the software, and are governed by the information within the shot and the motivation for it. These principles have been reasoned, explained and interpreted as an exact science based on physiology and applied psychology, and are described in every editing textbook.

In other words, even Windows Movie Maker can convey the same message, although it cannot deliver the same technical quality. As musicians say: “The guitar only helps.”* The same goes for software.

* Bozhidar Banov ‐ Porto

I’ll start in reverse order:

4. ADOBE PREMIERE

Platforms: macOS, Windows

FOR SOME REASON, THE MOST WIDELY USED IN BULGARIA

Price: €263 a year when paid in full upfront, or €779 a year if you need extras such as VFX, motion graphics (After Effects), Media Encoder and so on.

Given prices in the Bulgarian market, I do not find the expense cost-effective ‐ but more on that later.

I have worked with this rather buggy application since 1999 ‐ literally since the last millennium, when it was an affordable alternative to stable hardware platforms such as Insite, Discreet Edit and others. Between 2000 and 2005, it worked reasonably well only with additional hardware: Matrox RT10, RTX100, RT2000, RT2500 and so on. At a time when even a high salary was around 800 leva and freelancing was a distant dream for most professionals apart from the chalga crowd, those cards cost between 3,500 and 5,000 leva, offering at most S-VHS signal quality. I have even used Premiere with Targa 2000 and Matrox DigiSuite ‐ the same buggy interface and the same struggle, despite the better signal and lower compression.

Throughout that period, until the rise of GPUs, the application never entered the category of a world industry standard. Its consumer-focused marketing nevertheless misled the Bulgarian market and easily captured less demanding projects while claiming to offer a “real” professional workflow. Its advantage was its ability to ingest almost any codec, but the price was endless hours of heavy rendering and constant crashes.

Another factor that suited local production companies was how easy it was to pirate ‐ and we are not exactly known for our generosity.

When its reasonable price was replaced by a subscription model, intended to support the marketing position of an otherwise weak video platform alongside the undeniably good Photoshop and Illustrator, the hacking business model gradually faded. Partly because the terms were acceptable, and partly because younger creatives neither knew how nor wanted to learn. I see that aspect as positive, although it leaves a gap in the technical education of professional users. 😉 The only real “progress” in more than 20 years has been the steady introduction of tools that raise the price while isolating the product from standard interoperability protocols.

The result: Premiere distances itself from the truly professional segment and remains an overpriced tool with a consumer focus.

3. FINAL CUT PRO X

Platforms: macOS only

THE HIPSTER FAVOURITE OF MAC-ORIENTED YUPPIES

Price: €349.99, one-off payment

Between 2005 and 2017, Final Cut Studio 7 was the undisputed leader among mid-range NLEs in Bulgaria too. It subsequently fell victim to Apple’s corporate policy and was abruptly discontinued to make way for the new market “leader”: FCP X as a standalone application. The bundled Motion, Compressor, Color and Soundtrack Pro were either discontinued or developed into separate applications compatible with FCP X, each with its own price, taking the total to around €600.

The NLE itself, however, became a stripped-down tool aimed more at the general public than at people working in the film or television industries.

Breaking with fundamental editing concepts ‐ such as introducing a trackless timeline ‐ did not bring the expected popularity, despite efficient use of hardware resources. A low price does not help much when even a basic task requires paying for third-party tools to produce a finished result.

Working professionals rely on functionality, not advertising promises.

2. AVID MEDIA COMPOSER ‐ THE CRÈME DE LA CRÈME

Platforms: macOS, Windows

!!!!

Price: €1,579 a year

The true pinnacle of NLE editing. A top-flight editing workflow dating back to the days of heavy, expensive hardware systems. A system designed and managed through intelligent solutions for almost any scenario in video, television or film production. Excellent process structure and organisation, built on decades of industry experience.

The challenge is the unfamiliar mindset it demands of the average user ‐ Avid does not forgive a lack of knowledge and does not lend itself to intuitive clicking around. Its price and subscription plan narrow the user base further. Still, given its dependable stability and performance, the price is manageable for anyone who treats work as work rather than a hobby.

Fortunately, Avid has not entirely disappeared from the local market’s awareness. Those who know it know it well. Unfortunately, many users treat it like CapCut, Filmora and similar applications, which are outside the scope of this discussion.

1. DAVINCI RESOLVE ‐ THE LEADING CONTENDER FOR FIRST PLACE

Platforms: macOS, Windows and !!! Linux :0

Price: €345, a one-off payment for a perpetual licence.

If Adobe Premiere is the marketing phenomenon and Avid the industry standard, DaVinci Resolve is the quiet revolution of the past decade. Starting as a dedicated colour grading solution under Blackmagic Design, Resolve is now a complete post-production ecosystem: editing, colour grading, visual effects (Fusion) and sound design (Fairlight) ‐ all under one roof, without additional applications.

The free version offers features for which competitors charge hundreds of dollars a year in subscriptions. The Studio version is a one-off investment. This formula ‐ maximum functionality at minimum cost ‐ makes it a preferred choice for a growing number of professionals worldwide, and it is gradually establishing itself as a Hollywood standard too. (We like grand statements, but in this case the description reflects reality.)

In Bulgaria, DaVinci Resolve has not yet become deeply embedded in mainstream production thinking, but the trend is irreversible. Those who have worked with it seriously rarely go back.

CONCLUSION

All four leading platforms do the same job ‐ the question is who understands their functionality, how well, and what they need it for, without forgetting the pricing plan. 😉

Adobe Premiere continues to dominate in Bulgaria through inertia and marketing rather than merit.

Avid remains the enduring standard for those who make a profession of production.

Final Cut Pro X is a tool for a specific audience within a specific ecosystem.

DaVinci Resolve is the future ‐ or rather, it is already the present.

The guitar only helps. But a smart musician chooses the right guitar.

This article draws on personal industry experience and presents a subjective yet practically grounded perspective from a post-production specialist.

[9

post-271","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-practice
["GET
